The Best Delta credit card for travel

Do you have the Delta SkyMiles credit card yet? I do and it’s been amazing. I love having priority boarding and a free checked bag. That being said, do you wonder which one is the best Delta credit card for you?

The Platinum SkyMiles card includes a free companion pass, which is totally worth the annual fee. If you have a family, or a significant other, this card is a must-have travel card, especially if you fly through their hub: Atlanta.

Maybe you are like me and want a location independent business where you can work from the road and travel the world? Or maybe you just to get away more often without breaking the bank. Maybe you have a sister who is having a baby and you want to be able to go help out.

I did all of that this past Spring when I worked remotely from Houston when my niece was born, thanks to travel hacking using rewards points and miles.

Getting a credit card doesn't have to be scary.

Are you thinking these thoughts?:

“Nah, credit cards aren’t for me…I can’t be trusted!”

“I have a travel card and don’t want another one.”

For years, I avoided credit cards at all cost. Then an emergency would arise and my lonely card was right there by my side to bail me out.

You know what?

My first credit card never did anything for me except accrue debt. I also didn’t realize that having extra cards (that I never used) were actually good for my credit score.

There are a million credit cards out there and not all points, miles and rewards are created equal.

How to Pick a Travel Credit Card:

The key is to **plan** your normal spending and put all of your expenses on the right card, then pay it off monthly (or weekly!). This technique is how I went to 5 countries in Africa FOR FREE using travel hacking basics. And then I did it again a few years later!

My first big trip to Africa was two years in the making and a bucket-list adventure.

However, being self-employed provides certain challenges like no paid vacation time. So I needed that trip (and all my trips) to be as close to free as possible.

When I started down the rabbit hole that is “travel hacking,” I learned that I had been spending my money all wrong.

Now I put EVERYTHING on a travel credit card, like the Delta SkyMiles American Express card {I can get rewarded too if you apply using my referral link, so thanks!}.

Travel hacking isn’t too hard once you learn the basics and create a game plan.

Recently, I also traveled to the UK and Ireland, not only in First Class, but also my expenses were reimbursed with points from one of my credit cards.

The Delta SkyMiles Credit Card:

OK, so you’ve decided to get an airline card. Great! If you want to fly Delta mostly, then I definitely recommend their branded credit card from American Express.

They actually have several cards available, and you can decide which is best for you.

For example, take this promotional offer for the Delta Airlines Credit Card via AmEx for a 60,000 mile sign-up bonus, which is very easy to earn after just $1000 spent in the first 3-months (50,000 miles with the Platinum version. The Platinum includes a COMPANION PASS!).

The cool thing about having an airline card like the Delta SkyMiles card, in addition to your regular travel card is that you can merge points with a general travel card to travel faster, farther, or in first class.

The Delta SkyMiles Credit Card

Are you wondering if those annual fees are worth it to you? I totally get it. Well, the Gold card has no annual fee for the first year, and you could cancel the card before the fee hits you.

Or, if you fly Delta often, it’s worth keeping the card for these reasons:

  • Earn 60,000 bonus miles after you use your new card to make $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months.
  • Priority Boarding on Delta flights
  • First bag free on Delta flights
  • No Foreign transaction fees
  • No annual fee for the first year
  • and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within the first 3 months of card membership

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card on the other hand has a higher annual fee of $195.

Let’s break it down though… with the Platinum card, you get a FREAKING COMPANION PASS!!! That’s right. Your spouse, your kid, or your best pal can fly with you free. I’d say that’s totally worth the extra $100 (over the Gold’s $95 fee).

–>> Look at it this way… your friend/spouse/kid gets all of their Delta flights for a whopping $195 a year.

Why I started with rewards credit cards:

Look, I get it. You want to save up and pay for things as you spend the money. It is the responsible thing to do, that’s for sure. However, you can still do that and be responsible and use your credit cards.

You don’t even have to go to Africa or some other exotic place with your Delta SkyMiles credit card. Earning bonus miles with your preferred airline card allows you to afford traveling inexpensively.

Miles credit cards also offer the ability to spring for a last minute emergency flight or even random perks like gift cards to your favorite stores, extended warranty protection, rental car collision insurance and so much more.

What kind of credit card should you get?

Your first step to finding the right credit card is to think about what you will use it for. If you don’t travel a lot but have a shopping addiction with Amazon, then get a card with points that can be easily redeemed for cash. Discover and Chase will let you link your rewards cards to Amazon and use those points for online shopping.

I do this with my favorite business credit card, the Chase Ink Plus. Sign up here, even if you just have a side hustle business, for 80K points worth $800! For real! {using this affiliate link means I score a few points too, so thanks}

If you travel a lot for work, hotel and airline cards are a no-brainer. You can get free upgrades, free breakfast, free wi-fi and other perks with hotel cards.

Airline cards (like the Delta AmEx) usually give you priority boarding and a free checked bag. Airlines like Southwest will allow you a free companion flight if you spend enough on the card in a calendar year.

I use the Chase Ink cards for all of my business spending. Earn 80,000 bonus points with Chase Ink Business Preferred. I can be rewarded too if you apply here and are approved for the Card. Learn more here. {affiliate link}

What’s keeping you from putting your money to work? Let me know how I can help you get started.

If you already have the Delta SkyMiles rewards card, be sure to share your own referral link with your spouse, friends, coworkers, etc. so you can earn even more free miles!
